Philosophy

I started acting at eleven and spent much of the next decade on theatre stages across Switzerland. At the same time, I began writing music. Over time, musical storytelling became more important to me than acting itself.

That background still shapes the way I compose today. I start with the character, looking for contradictions, desires, memories and things left unsaid. Sometimes I find parts of the character in myself and carry them into my own life. Once I understand them from within, the music often begins to write itself.

I’m most at home in projects where I can really get inside the characters and let the music grow from there.

David is a composer who finds his own language for each film.
In each of his works there is a surprising idea that binds the viewer/listener emotionally to the film.
In addition, in David's work you can also feel his closeness to songwriting, which gives his scores a strong melodic quality.

Vita

David Hohl is a Swiss composer for film, stage and concert. He studied Composition for Film, Theatre and Media at Zurich University of the Arts.
His film work includes Stiller by Stefan Haupt, Sekuritas by Carmen Stadler, Love, Bees and Fuckery by Marem Hassler, Delhi Dreams by Yamini Deen and Christof Schaefer, and DJ Bobo – Unexpected by Vanessa Nöcker.

His stage and concert work includes the symphony Nebel in den Niederungen, music for Das Geheimnis der Marquise at the Komische Oper Berlin, and an overture for the Basel Film Music Festival performed by the Sinfonieorchester Basel.

David Hohl was awarded the Kulturpreis Solothurn. He is currently working on his second symphony and is co-founder of Sàd Records and Sàd Studios in Basel.
